The Wake Forest University Demon Deacons started using the school colors of black and gold as early as 1895. These school colors originated from a tiger mascot used by Wake Forest in its earliest days, drawn by a Wake Forest student who died just a year after creating the color combination and tiger design. After several decades of poor athletic performance, a new athletic director and coach took over and wanted to give the teams a fresh start. Since many of the basketball players were wild on the court, the name "Demon Deacons" was deemed appropriate to recognize the energy and passion of the players.
The Wake Forest Deacons play in the Atlantic Coast Conference against rivals like the North Carolina State Wolfpack and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Wake Forest Deacons football team plays on the BB&T Field, named for a bank. Groves Stadium surrounds the BB&T Field and holds just 31,000 fans.
